Exegesis - Introduction



In the name of Allah,

Most Gracious Most Merciful


In Friday, Ramadan 22nd, 1422 Hegira, corresponding to December 17th, 2001 AD, the project of the exegesis of the Noble Koran was inaugurated in Al-Atiq mosque, Tizi ouzou.


We implore God to help us to achieve the following objectives:

  1. To bring out the exegesis into cassettes and CD ROMs.

  2. To publish it in Arabic.

  3. To translate it into French and English.


I. The meaning of the word exegesis

1. Linguistically: it means demonstration and clarification. The Almighty Allah say: «And whenever they bring you any argument, We bring you the Truth and the best explanation» [Surat Al-furqan/ The criterion, 33].

He also say: «…And We revealed to you the Koran; that you may make clear to mankind what was sent for them, and they may reflect ». [Surat An-Nahl/The bees, 44].


2. Conventionally: It is a science that searches for Allah's intention and aim through Koran' significance and meaning within the limits of human's capacities.


II.The merits of the exegesis science

  1. To know the essence of faith.

  2. To know the legitimate (Islamic) rules.

  3. To know God's way (Manhaj).

III. The types of exegesis

1. The exegesis transmitted by tradition:

This type of exegesis relies on the Koranic verses, the prophet' Sunna and the Sahaba' sayings (the prophet's companions' sayings).


The famous exegetes (Mufasirin: the specialized on the exegesis) among Sahaba:

¨ Abu Baker Essadik.

¨ Omar Bnu Elkhatab.

¨ Othman Bnu Afaan.

¨ Ali Bnu Abi Taleb.

¨ Abdu Allah Bnu Abass.

¨ Abdu Allah Bnu Messaoud.

¨ Abdu Allah Bnu Ezoubir.

¨ Abu Moussa El Achaari.


Among the famous books of exegesis of this kind the following ones:

¨ Imam Essamarkandi's Bahr El Ulum (The Sea of Sciences).

¨ El Hafidh Bnu Katheer's The Exegesis of the Noble Koran.

¨ Imam Esayouti's Addur El Manthour (The Scattered Pearls).


2. The exegesis by intelligibility (reason)

It is one that depends on reason and intelligibility within the limits of the Arabic language meanings, and on the light of Islam's whole aims (objectives).


The famous books of exegesis of this type:

¨ Mafateeh Al-Ghaib (The keys of the Secret Things).

¨ Imam El-baydhaoui's exegesis.

¨ Imam El Khazin's exegesis.

¨ Imam An-Nassafi's exegesis.


3. The exegesis that gathers the two previous types
¨ Chaikh Mohamad Rachid Reda's Tafsir El-Manar.
¨
Muhammad Ali Essabouni's Safwatu-Ettafasser (The Choicest Exegesis.


IV. Repairs of the chosen method's (Manhaj):

  1. To mingle the correct of the transmitted by tradition exegesis with the explicit of the intelligible one.

  2. To show the revelation's reasons whether they are corresponding to the verses.

  3. To demonstrate some linguistic and poetic aspects of the Arabic language.

  4. To set off the legitimate rules embodied in the Koranic verses.

V. The definition of the Koran

It is the tangible word of God, revealed to the prophet may peace be upon him, in the Arabic language, recited during prayer, transmitted ton us by narration and written down in books.

1) The Makee Koran: It is the part that revealed in Mecca before the Prophet's hegira (his journey from Mecca to Medina because of the persecution he met in Mecca.

It deals generally with the principles of Islam.


2) The Madanee Koran:

It is the other part that is revealed after the Prophet's hegira .it deals or shows the rituals of worships and transactions.
